It's a very classic, world domination plot, and the necromancers are the current Big Bad, with the faeri.

Now, I know these themes have been flogged to death a long time ago, but this version is really quite good. Rescued in the nick of time by an enigmatic sorcerer, she discovers that she possesses magical powers and must go to Whitehall School to learn how to master them.

This book is more hardcore action-fantasy and somewhat less childish that the Harry Potter books however I have to confess that, although I bought them all, I have only read the first three of the Potter ones yet. Schooled in Magic is the first book in Christopher G. Nuttall's series by the same name, and it follows the main character, Emily, as she tries to adjust to the medieval magical world she's been kidnapped into. The character is not believable, the thoughts are not believable, the actions are not believable, and frankly I lost it over a 16 year old girl heading up to the Dean of Students and demanding to know how to patent double-entry accounting.

The introduction of modern technologies based on knowledge, like the abacus, our alphabet and numerical system, would be huge and cheap advantages in a world this squalid. I'm sure that this has been there all along but I had rarely noticed it.

more like 4-4.5 stars but the series was so addicting I had to give it 5.

Medieval worlds aren't great places to be, for anyone, and this series does well capturing the stench, squa.

Emily, having read the Harry Potter books, is full of comparisons and comments on the same.

I dont like the main character, and never have i grown to like her no matter how deep into the series I get.

So the author indulges in, at least some, stupid and unnecessary HP criticism.

This is literally Harry Potter with Hermione Granger as the main character. Interestingly, through ineffective and boring education on Earth, she is exactly as handicapped in ACTUALLY MAKING THINGS WORK as most of us would be if thrown suddenly into a vastly different milieu. The author mostly keeps these pot shots at HP good-natured but at one point Emily comments on how naive the HP books are since even a simple levitation spell can be used to kill. In HP the muggle world is clearly unimportant to wizards and so no one bothers do things like kill muggles with levitation and using a levitation spell on a wizard would be pointless since a wizard would be able to deflect such a weak spell or, at the very least, levitate himself back down to the ground.
